Python Games & Apps

Level up your Python with functions, lists, strings and dictionaries, then build real text games and apps.

For students who have finished Python Foundations. Learn to organise code with functions and to work with data using lists, strings and dictionaries, then use those skills to build a text adventure, Hangman, a quiz app and a final app of your own.

About this course

Python Games & Apps takes students from writing short scripts to building organised programs. The big idea of the course is structure: breaking a problem into functions, and storing information in lists and dictionaries so a program can handle lots of data at once.

The first four modules each focus on one tool (functions, lists, strings, dictionaries), with auto-checked practice problems that test the student's functions directly, the same way professional code is tested. The final module puts those tools together in classic text games: a text adventure, Hangman and a quiz app with a question bank, followed by a final app the student designs.

Lessons are live and 1-to-1, so the instructor can stretch confident students and slow down where needed. Students write every line themselves and learn to test their own code.

What your child will learn

  • Write functions with parameters and return values, and explain why functions help
  • Store, change and loop over collections of data with lists
  • Index, slice and transform strings with string methods
  • Model real information with dictionaries and lists of dictionaries
  • Use random numbers and game loops to build interactive text games
  • Break a bigger program into small, testable functions
  • Plan, build, test and explain an app of their own

Course structure

  1. 1

    Functions

Package code into reusable functions with parameters and return values, and learn how variables live inside functions.

    3 lessons

  2. 2

    Lists

Store many values in one variable, loop over them, change them and use common list patterns.

    3 lessons

  3. 3

    Strings in depth

Treat text like a list of characters: index and slice it, transform it with string methods and loop over every letter.

    3 lessons

  4. 4

    Dictionaries & data

Store information as key–value pairs, loop over dictionaries, count with them and combine lists with dictionaries.

    3 lessons

  5. 5

    Games & apps

Use random numbers, game loops, functions, lists, strings and dictionaries to build a text adventure, Hangman, a quiz app and a final app.

Text adventure

Explore a world of connected rooms, pick up items and find the way to win, all driven by typed commands.

Hangman

Guess the secret word letter by letter before running out of lives, using lists, strings and functions.

Quiz app

A quiz with a dictionary question bank, shuffled questions and a final score.

Final app

An app of the student's own design, such as a game, a tracker, a word tool or a story generator.
